About Us
Cara House promotes and supports the health and wellbeing of families and individuals in the heart of Letterkenny through social, recreational and educational activities.
Cara House opened in May 2004 to provide a constructive and enjoyable space for people who have time on their hands in the day time. In 2008 it became a Family Resource Centre – one of 106 centres under this programme nationally. From opening just three evenings and one morning a day Cara House now opens six days a week.
The work of Cara House, which includes activities, courses and interest groups as well as services, provides a valuable resource for the whole Letterkenny community from the cradle to the grave, especially at periods in their lives when individuals are vulnerable. Cara House welcomes everyone with respect, offering peer support, friendship and acceptance. It is socially inclusive, with high quality services and activities offered at a rate that makes them accessible to all. Clients are encouraged to offer peer support and encouragement and to contribute their expertise, ideas and time, thereby building a community that cares.
Cara House has been fortunate in attracting staff who contribute to this by their caring natures and concern for all who attend. Many, both paid staff and volunteers, have worked happily in Cara House for several years.
For the past three years Cara House has been searching for new premises. With the recession space became a premium commodity in Cara House. Rooms were used in the daytime by adults and in the afternoons by the children attending the afterschool clubs. Donegal County Council came to the rescue offering space four days a week to activities which needed larger rooms, in the Regional Cultural Centre. The management committee gratefully acknowledges the financial support offered by many local groups and businesses since they launched their ‘One in a Million’ campaign last September.
Cara House is supported by Tusla, The Child and Family Agency, HSE Older People’s, Mental Health and Disability Services, Donegal County Council, Donegal Education and Training Board, Donegal Local Development Company (Sicap Programme), Associated Charities Trust, National Lottery, Letterkenny Lions Club and Letterkenny Mental Health Association.
All courses, activities and programmes are booked through Cara House
